Teeth are a very important part of your body, and taking great care of them is paramount to staying healthy. Did you know that problems with your teeth can affect other areas of your body such as your heart? Research has shown that patients with serious gum disease often develop a chronic condition. Even if you practice good oral hygiene, it’s important to use the right products. The American Dental Association (ADA) researches oral products to determine if they meet the rigorous standards necessary to garner the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

What is the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance?

Although the ADA has been around since the late 1800s (the days of tooth powders made from chalk), the first ADA Seal of Acceptance wasn’t awarded until 1931. The ADA began to use the Seal of Acceptance to help protect consumers from outrageous and unreliable promises from oral product manufacturers. Today, over 100 consultants (representing various fields such as microbiology, toxicology, and chemistry, among many others) review product submissions. The program is voluntary for oral product companies, participating is beneficial because consumers are more likely to buy a product that the ADA stands behind. Once the ADA awards the Seal of Acceptance, it is good forĀ a five-year period, after which the company will need to re-apply.

How does a product qualify?

A company must provide a significant amount of information to the ADA to be considered for a Seal of Acceptance. Necessary information includes ingredient lists, clinical and laboratory studies, evidence that the company’s manufacturing process is compliant with Good Manufacturing Practices, and submission of all packaging to ensure that the marketing is honest and truthful. If the composition of a product changes during its’ five-year Seal of Acceptance period, the company must notify the ADA and resubmit the product for approval before marketing.

How do I know if a product has the ADA Seal of Acceptance?

Accepted products are required to use the Seal of Acceptance in their packaging, along with a Seal Statement. The Seal Statement informs consumers why the ADA has awarded the product with the seal. The ADA Seal of Acceptance helps consumers make informed decisions based on the expertise of industry professionals and scientists, ensuring that they choose products that will offer the best oral care.

The ADA Seal of Acceptance is a coveted award in the oral hygiene industry because research has proven that packaging bearing the seal directly affects consumers’ purchasing decisions.
